Trip notes: Hickey: This is an ideal layover for U.S.
101 cruisers yearning to spend a night in the redwoods. The park is best
known for its camps set amid redwoods, as well as the nearby South Fork
Eel River with its steelhead fishing in the winter. The camp is set at
800 feet. Rock Creek: This is one of two main campgrounds set in
a redwood grove at Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area. It is the classic
state park camp, with numbered sites, flat tent spaces, picnic tables,
and food lockers. Hiking is only fair in this park, but most people enjoy
the short tromp down to the nearby South Fork Eel River. In the winter,
steelhead migrate through the area. Redwood Campground: This is
one of three camps in Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, and it is
by far the most unusual. To reach Redwood Campground requires driving over
a temporary "summer bridge," which provides access to a pretty
spot along the South Fork Eel River. In the winter, out comes the bridge
and up comes the river. The elevation at the camp is 800 feet.
