BearPaw is our Council’s outdoor winter camping experience for Scouts BSA troops and Venturing crews. Indoor training for BearPaw is held November 2, 2019 at Mount Olives Ministries- Milpitas. In this training session we cover, in extreme detail, how to dress properly (or keeping dry), building warm snow shelters, traveling on snow, menus and cooking, winter first aid, Leave No Trace, driving in winter conditions, and many more topics.
The second part of this program is the Outdoor camping experience, with or without snow on February 21, 22 and 23, 2019 at Cisco Grove RV Park and Campground on I-80 near Donner Summit. This is the tail-end of the President’s Day week when most school districts have the week off.
For units that have never participated in winter camping, it is highly encouraged that a minimum of one adult and multiple youth leader be pre-trained in various aspects of cold weather camping. They in turn are to train other scouts and adults at their home unit in the following months prior to the outdoor event. Even if you are an experienced winter camper, new information or refresher course will help ensure a fun and safe experience, especially for first timers.
